What is NIAW?

National Infertility Awareness Week is April 18-24, 2021. National Infertility Awareness Week®, (NIAW) is a movement, founded in 1989 by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. Its mission is to empower you and change the conversation around infertility. When the community comes together and talks about National Infertility Awareness Week®, we will: Enhance public understanding that infertility needs and deserves attention, Ensure that people trying to build a family know the guidelines for seeing a specialist, and Educate lawmakers about how infertility impacts people in their state. It’s very common for women to struggle with infertility or have difficulty becoming pregnant. Approximately 15 percent of reproductive age heterosexual couples will have difficulty conceiving as defined by greater than 6 to 12 months of attempting conception without success. There is no other medical disease that affects 15 percent or more of the reproductive age population. It is estimated that there are approximately 8 million couples in the U.S. diagnosed with infertility.

FIH on HI NOW

Fertility Institute of Hawaii was featured as a guest on HI Now on April 19, 2021 as part of HMAA’s Mommy Moments segments. Drs. Frattarelli and Karmon discussed an individual approach to treatment. They also talked about just because a woman has a baby doesn’t mean that getting pregnant a second time will be easy. One major misconception is that infertility only occurs in women who have never had children before. Difficulty conceiving after a previous successful delivery is called secondary infertility. Unfortunately, women with secondary infertility are less likely to seek treatment, possibly because of the misconception that if they have conceived before, they should be able to do so again. Join the doctors as they give potential patients tips and treatment suggestions aimed at boosting fertility and options for treatment to grow their family.
