Sperm Cryopreservation

The Fertility Institute of Hawaii will cryopreserve or freeze sperm for the partner or spouse of the sperm donor to use. Unlike the woman’s eggs, sperm is much less affected by the aging process. Therefore, men rarely need to freeze sperm secondary to advanced age.

Although sperm can be cryopreserved for any reason, the most common reasons to freeze sperm in Hawaii are:

  • Deploying military for use with IUI or IVF
  • Male partner unable to be present when a sperm sample is needed
  • Male partner unable to produce a sperm sample when needed
  • Testicular or other cancers
  • Scheduled chemotherapy or radiation therapy
  • Planned hormonal therapies
